Customs Cowes - Oaths of Admissions Book 1821 - 1834

Transcribed from above book held at the National Archives, Kew - Reference CUST 61/178

Introduction

In the early days of Customs all Officers had to take Communion (the Lord's Supper) according to the rites of the Church of England and be issued with a Sacrament Certificate signed by the Clergyman presiding and two Church Wardens. Records of these decline towards the end of the Eighteenth Century, although the last record I have found is 1820. This book, starting in 1821, records the Oath given by Officers on admission to the service, and also details of Bonds and Guarantors required in the case of the more senior Officers, these are not transcribed.

A example of the Oath was:

We (name), (position) in the Service of  Customs at (location) do swear to be true and faithful in the Execution to the best of our Knowledge and Power of the Trust committed to our respective Charges and Inspections and that we will not require, take or receive any Fee, Private Gratuity or Reward whether Pecuniary or of any other description either directly or indirectly for any Service, Act or Duty, Matter or Thing done or performed or to be done or Performed in the Execution or Discharge of any of the duties of our Office or Employment any Account whatsoever other than Our Salaries or what is or shall be allowed by Law or any special order of the Lords Commissioners of His Majesties Treasury or the Commissioners of His Majesties Customs for the Time being.

So help me God.

Given at (location), (date)

Signed by Officers, witnessed by Collector and Comptroller

During the period covered by this book part of the Customs Service was reorganised into the Coast Guard, this was basically the  Preventive Water Guard which included Riding Officer, Preventive Boats and Revenue Cruizers, it remained under the control of the Board of Customs until the 1830's, when it was taken over by the Admiralty
